Here's my latest set of graphs as of today (7th March). They look healthy but also document the big downswing I had at the $20s when I first moved up.

I suck at commitment!

Haven't blogged in such a long time that the page disappeared from my history, whoops... sorry guys.

As I said in my last post, I was hoping to move up to $22s in February and play enough SnGs to get SilverStars status on PokerStars.

I moved up to the $22s almost immediately at the start of the month, plays only 28 $11s and profiting $124.

Then I hit a huge slump when I got to the $22s and dropped around $250, which I made back towards the end of the month and finished the month profiting $92 over a total of 94 $22 SnGs, making a total monthly profit of $216.

The bad news is that I missed SilverStar status by a LOOONG way, I was around 400 FPP away from it (40 SnGs). This was mainly due to what I call 'lack of commitment' or 'procrastination'... aka. I was too lazy to play so many SnGs in a month.

I'll try to get SilverStar status in March while getting my ROI up to a nice rate... or die. Definitely one of the two.

February Intentions

February is going to be one of my most heavy-duty poker months to date, you'll be glad to hear.

I want to attain SilverStar status on PokerStars this month, therefore I need to play 300 $10 SnGs this month (about 11 per day).

My bankroll as of right now is $1523, if I hit $1600 I may start dabbling in $20 SnGs, so that could cut down the amount of SnGs I need to play.

My profit targets for this month is anything over $1,000.

Also, as people have been asking about my 24 hour SnG challenge in the comment thread, I will remember to update you on it.. now.

I got to about 3 hours in and realised I was structuring my SnGs in an uncomfortable way that I was not use to, this was affecting results, so I cancelled and rethought the masterplan. I have yet to try again, maybe if I have a free weekend soon I'll give it a go.

January in Review

For the most part, I took January as a month off of poker, concentrating on other things in my life that needed doing.

Consequently, I only managed to play a total of 16 SnGs in the month, profiting a total of $49 on those at an ITM of 62% and a ROI of 27%, which isn't too bad considering how sparingly I played.

BUT, yesterday I played an $11 Double Shootout to the $750k Guaranteed on Stars (formerly the $500k Guaranteed). 64 entrants (8 tables of 8 ), and the top two finishers got tickets. And I won it!

Got very lucky to survive when 3 handed on the final table, sucked out to knock the poor guy out in 3rd at the FT to win my $215 seat:

Turn: (t7020) 6:heart: (2 players)

Final Pot: t7020

Results in white below:
Hero has 7d Td (straight, ten high).
BB has Jc Qh (high card, king).
Outcome: Hero wins t7020.

I sucky good at poker!

So, being the wuss I am, I unregistered from the $750k and took my T$215. This brings my bankroll to a total of $1513 (minus $50 that is stuck for all eternity in PartyPoker because I can't be doing with cashing that out).

And, being the wuss that I am, I still refuse to move up from $10 SnGs. Maybe when I hit $1600 will I move up to the $20s (quadtabling as always).

So in conclusion, while barely playing in January, I had a very good and profitable month, mostly thanks to my nice hit in the Double Shootout yesterday.

Here's my updated graphs for $11s (122 SnGs played total over December and January).

Long post.. ahem.. posted

Finally got my long post on FTR up, please read and absorb!

http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=27258

I've taken a one month break from poker to fulfill some personal commitments. I hope to be getting back into the game in February. Expect daily updates to my blog then.

Sneak preview of my next big FTR post

Here's a paragraph from my next large post to go in the Begginer's forum on FTR, hopefully sometime tomorrow. The article deals with spotting an avoiding tilt, and how taking breaks from poker can maximise profits. STOP PRESS!

QUOTE:

How long is a break?

So taking a break to avoid tilt is all well and good, but how do you know when it’s time to go back and play poker again. Well, trust me when I say, you’ll know. And you will know, and I’ll tell you how you know.

I’ve told you already, that tilt is when you get pissed off at poker in general, and when you get pissed off is the time you want to be taking your break. You’ll know that you’re ready to go back and put your ‘A’ game back on when you have a positive craving to play poker. You’ll know when it’s time to go back to poker when you have this craving, and you are no longer annoyed by any part of poker anymore.

So, in conclusion, there is no set time as to how long a break should be. It could ranger anywhere from a couple of hours to a matter of many weeks. The important thing to remember is that however long it takes, DO NOT PLAY POKER AGAIN UNTIL YOU FEEL YOU CAN PLAY YOUR ‘A’ GAME..

Happy New Year

Happy New Year.

I'm currently writing a long post to be posted here tomorrow or the day after, depending on when I finish it. It is a complete review of my first full year playing poker. That's why I haven't updated for a while. Sorry guys. :(

24 hours of straight poker = +EV?

Well I guess I'll find out today/tomorrow...

As part of my Christmas bonanza of poker, I have decided to participate in a 24 hour poker session, between the hours of midday 23rd December and midday 24th December (EST).

Am I crazy? Most definitely. Do I care? Nope.

I plan to quadtable $10 SnGs for the 24 hours, taking occasional 10 minute breaks to pee/poo (whichever vowel suits you best). As soon as I bust out of a SnG, I will load up another one.

So to make this successful and give me an incentive to to well, I need to set some goals. So based on some calculations, I have come up with these targets:

SnGs Played Target: 85
Profit Target: $187

The profit target takes into account possible downswings, but I could finish way below or way above that target. The main target which will be difficult to achieve is the SnGs played target, hopefully I can nail this.

As an update to my stats so far in SnGs, here's how I've been doing:

SnGs Played: 76
ITM %: 47
ROI %: 38
Total Buyins: $836
Total Winnings: $1152
Net Profit: +$316

So I'm doing very good so far, hopefully I can continue this is my 24 hour session. Updates on the session to follow.

SnG Tracker

...is very good!

People have been talking about it all the time on FTR, praising it. I decided not to look into it because I assumed it would cost an amount in the region of what PokerTracker costs. Wrong! I downloaded it a few days ago and realised that it is completely free.

You can also import your stats from PokerTracker directly into SnG Tracker, which is pretty awesome considering I'm putting all my SnGs into PokerTracker.

Then it generates cool graphs of your results, which are linked below.

You can download it at http://sng.pokercomment.com

OK, so here are my cumulative profit, ROI/ITM and finish % graphs for $10 SnGs after 56 of them (links are provided rather than actual pictures due to the picture sizes being too big to fit nicely into the FTR blog page setup). Do these look decent to you? Comments/suggestions/requests welcome as always in my comment thread ( http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22974 ).

My $10 SnG Stats So Far

Here's my stats through all my $10 SnGs so far. I haven't played as much as I could have, mainly due to other commitments, but it's still a happy story.

Regular SnGs vs Turbo SnGs

Could one actually be superior to another, or are they just different styles of play?

I have always maintained that the regular and the turbo PokerStars SnGs can both be beatable at the same rate, because they are 2 different kettles of fish (no pun intended) and should be played different ways. But as of the last few weeks I've been turning to the other way of thinking, thinking that regular SnGs are actually beatable at a higher rate than turbos. Am I being nieve? Probably. Am I right? Just maybe.

I've had ample previous experience with the single-table turbo SnGs, winning some at them (exact ITM/ROI remain unknown due to my early days of poker never being recorded). But it goes without saying that they are swing.. very swingy. You need a certain amount of luck to win them (eg. needing a big 60/40 to hold up when 5 handed because the blinds are so high that it's a push-fest). However, huge upswings can occur when those big coinflips hold up time and time again.

In the (small) sample of 40 regular SnGs I've played, I've noticed a huge difference in strategies used, as I expected, but I feel this difference does give you an edge. There is not so much luck involved due to the slower blinds (duh, I'll elaborate). This means that there is not so much variance, so less rough downswings happen, and less great upswings happen. Your results go in more of a smooth upward curve, which in the long run should level out with the turbo SnG profit line, except that line is a lot more jiggly-jaggly wiggly-waggly.

But I feel that the edge you gain in regular SnGs over turbo SnGs is emotion. I'm sure most of you reading this have suffered from tilt and you probably still do occasionally suffer from tilt. I'm not going to hide the fact that I have problems controlling my tilt. You've got this emotional advantage in the regular SnGs because your results are not all over the place in the short term (short term is around 100 SnGs in my opinion) like you are in the turbos. Therefore you will not be getting into the two types of tilt (frustration - downswing & complacency - upswing) as much. Therefore it is easier to keep your head on, consequently easier to play your 'A' game, and therefore your overall results will inevitably be better.

That is why I think the regular PokerStars SnGs are more profitable then the turbo PokerStars SnGs. Feel free to give your opinion on this in my blog comment thread.

In regard to how I have actually been doing result-wise, I'll update my little table once I receive full tournament summaries from Stars (they're lagging for some reason). I'm up around $217 through 40 SnGs, I can't draw any conclusions from this however, as my sample size is small to the point of meaningless, but hey, +$217 is still sweet. :)

Until next time,
dwarfman.

S-P-E-C-I-A-L-I-S-A-T-I-O-N

Yay hi,

It's again been a while since an update, again due to issues outside of poker. Many apologies.

The crazy caps title does have a reason. Specialisation is my main (and hopefully one of my only) problem in my poker game. I've simply been bouncing round too many games and have not been specialising in anything in particular. This is very very bad, so I plan to focus this month on one game in a desperate effort to recover my specialisation problem.

I have $1,000 in my bankroll and will play $10 SnGs during December (maybe moving up to the $20s if I hit an upswing. I am choosing the $10 regular SnGs on PokerStars as I feel these have many donks and are not so much a crapshoot. I am going to be quadtabling them but since I have 100 buyins I feel that I can absorb even the worst of downswings.

I'll keep a track of my stats in here. So far things have been going well and I'm off to a good start. I did in fact have a fantastic quadtabling session yesterday; my 4 finishes being 6th, 1st, 1st and 1st for a $91 session profit. I'll post tables of sessions in posts to come.

Hopefully I can keep this good start up.

A somewhat controversial opinion if I may?

This will raise some eyebrows and hopefully develop into a good discussion.

I do not think $25 NL full ring on Party should be camped any more.

Alright, I'm sure that your first thoughts will be 'yeah right he's just saying that because he got some bad beats today'. You're wrong. I've been profiting all week at $25 NL but it is very much the pinnacle of tightness, the amount of money you can expect to make per hour is far lower than a respectable amount that a poker player of my ability should be making. Simply put, it is simply too tight to get paid off well now!

After pumping my PokerTracker database full of observed hands this month 24 hours a day, I have over 100k of observed hands histories and the average player VP$IP is 19%. 19% should be my VP$IP, not everyone else's!

I can remember that when I played the game back in March 2005 I had an average player VP$IP of something around 30%, that's how much it has changed.

Although I am not arguing that this game isn't +EV anymore, it definitely is. The simple fact is that I don't think it is worth playing anymore, there is more money to be made elsewhere (ESPECIALLY since I have adequate skills in MTTs, SnGs and LHE ring).

Anywho I have writer's block on this issue, maybe I can put some words to.. um.. pixel later.

Comments appreciated as always.

Time to build a bankroll!

Apologies for not updating in almost a week, I've had stuff outside of poker to take care of.

Well, after paying off everyone who has given me money to work with, I am left with a semi-meaty bankroll of $1000 (the most I've ever had to work with... and it's ALLLL MIIIINE! ).

I'm not going to rely on finishing deep in MTTs this time, as I feel a downswing could all but kill off a bankroll like mine, so I've decided to play up to around $5000 focussing a lot on the PartyPoker $25 NL full ring games, and moving up to the $50 NL full ring games once I hit $1500 before I think about playing MTTs exclusively again.

Of course I will still play the odd MTT on PokerStars (including the FTR Gauntlets of course), but the main plan of action is destroying the full ring at Party.

So I'll update my daily stats here. And here's so far:

25th Nov: 222 hands played: +$12.43
26th Nov: 118 hands played: +$44.68
27th Nov: 484 hands played: +$16.73
RUNNING NET PROFIT TOTAL: +$73.84

More details to come soon in the way of goals (it's time to eat right now), but I hope I can maintain this positive start I have made.

Upswings in MTTs = Not Bad At All

In my last post I was ecstatic because I got my first final table in many months in an MTT. So I got another two today :).

I got 6th out of 824 in the Stars $5 freeze for $180.

Then I played Gauntlet III Game 1 and got 3rd out of 53 for $63.

This takes my bankroll over the $1500 mark ($1200 when I pay this $300 off today).

Therefore, I need to reconsider playing the $6 turbo SnGs (do I really want to waste my time playing SnGs where I have 200+ buyins?!).

In the meantime, I'll stick to playing a few MTTs, as I feel I have proven to myself that I can beat these over the last week. Hopefully I'll continue doing well and maybe get a MONSTER finish soon.

Finally, the final table

I made my first final table in a long long time yesterday, and it was from a huge field MTT, so I'm am very pleased.

I came 7th out of 1491 in the PokerStars $5 freezeout for $246.

I am very pleased with my overall performance in this MTT, although I must confess that I did get very lucky on a couple of occasions to stay in the tourney, and I also made a mistake on the final table (I came into the final table as chipleader icon_mad ).

My final table mistake went something like this. I'm just over an average stack at 350k with 7 players remaining, and I pick up KJs at UTG+2. So I raise my standard 2.5xBB (to 50k) and it's folded around to the SB, who calls, and the big blind folds. SB is a pretty loose player, and he does have something against me, as I pwned him earlier in the tourney - since then he has been calling most of my raises if he had the chance. I think my hand is good. The flop comes AA3, and he checks to me. Then I make the silly mistake of checking, to induce a bet that I could raise, whereas I should've bet out around 75k for information here. The turn is another rag, and we both check (my check is to induce a bet that I can raise). The river is another low rag, and he bets out 100k, I feel that he is trying to steal the pot, and I push all in for 300k. He insta-calls and flips AT. That was by far the biggest lapse in concentration I have had in a while, and what a time to do it!

Either way, due to the aforementioned luck I talked about, I am very happy with the $250, and this takes my bankroll over $1.3k (although I still owe $300).

In other news, my quadtabling of the $6 SnGs is well underway, although I've only played 23, I feel I've made a decent start (especially considering I've really never qudtabled SnGs before). Here's my stats so far:

SnGs Played: 23
ROI: 19.20%
ITM: 43.48%
Net: +$28.70

1st: 3
2nd: 4
3rd: 3

Hopefully I can keep these stats up (preferably improving upon them), and maybe get a few more good MTT finishes.

A Question of SnG

Hey guys,

Here's an interesting thought for you, regarding SnGs, bankroll management and $/hr (and a little bit of my warped imagination).

With a bankroll of $1000, let's call it $700 because I'm paying someone $300 at the end of this week, I have been playing $15+1 turbos - playing two tables at once. Any more than two and I don't feel comfortable with the amount I have at risk.

I'll comfortably five-table the $6 turbos, risking $32.50 a session (50 cents more than a dual tabling session of $15+1.

From observation over the last few days, I feel that there is a (relatively) large difference in your ROI capabilities between $6 and $15 SnGs. While the majority of the players at the $6 turbos are obviously donks, I was surprised at the amount of relatively sane people and multitabler rocks that I have been encountering at the $15s.

If we round down the $32.50 per session for the $6s to $32 for ease of maths, we'll just say that sessions cost the same for each level.

Assuming that my ROI will be higher for the $6s because of this difference I have noticed - surely it would be a better idea for me to be quadtabling the $6s day in day out rather than dual tabling the $15s, for a couple of reasons.
1. I will inevitably make more $ per hour.
2. I am playing more hands - more experience attained (yes, I still need a hell of a lot of experience, one cannot get enough experience).

The only potential disadvantage I can see is higher levels of variance when quadtabling - but playing $6s, surely I can't expect too much of a variance difference between this and dual tabling the $15s?

It is for this reason (more $ per hour) that I'll be quadtabling the $6s pretty much every day, hopefully building experience and a bankroll. Downswings will be inevitable when quadtabling SnGs, but like every good poker player should do, I'll just ride them out.

What do you think about this plan of action? Comments in my thread are always appreciated.

- Dwarfy.

Getting back on the tourney scene

I feel I've made a decent start back with tourneys on PokerStars to 'break the ice', doing decently in SnGs and already getting ITM in an MTT.

I've played four $15 turbo SnGs, finishing 1st, 6th, 4th and 2nd - so I feel that my SnG game hasn't gone too rusty and I can make some good profit here if I continue to play them.

I've played three MTTs, a $5, $10 and a 180 man $20, results below:

$5 MTT: 210th out of 769 - $0 Winnings
$10 MTT: 54th out of 753 - $18.82 Winnings
$20 MTT: 26th out of 180 - $0 Winnings

Despite the decent results and 26% ITM I run on MTTs, I still feel I have a major mentality leak, which I will go on to in more detail tomorrow morning - as it's 1.40am now and I have to be up in 5 hours.

Peace.

Short break - I'm back with a small bang

I recently took a short 4 day break from poker to get my head together and collect my thoughts about my recent big wins.

I come back with a much clearer mind, and feel that my break has helped me. I would definitely recommend taking short breaks if you need time to clear your headspace, it really does help - much more than you'd think.

I made my comeback today and played that same $5 rebuy $10k guaranteed on PartyPoker... and I got ITM again. I came 103rd out of 1312 for $29, although I showed a net loss due to rebuys, but it's all about the experience :).

I plan now to shift some money over to PokerStars and get onto the ever-improving MTT scene there, I don't feel I'm quite ready to play LHE full time yet, I was having big swings. I need to finish SSH, and if my MTT game goes a bit pear-shaped (it shouldn't!! ), I have a solid LHE game to back me up.

What I am most interested in is the 180 player MTTs - although I am reluctant to play them with only $800 in my bankroll, I will probably play $10 MTTs and $15 turbo SnGs until I have around $1000, then I'll dabble in those. In relation to this, what on earth would you say is a proper bankroll for $20+2 180 player MTTs? I'm going with around $1000 (50 buyins) as a minimum... but I'm really not sure, should it remain the same as standard MTT bankroll management requirements? What is your opinion?

I feel my MTT game is very solid, I have an ITM of 25.86% - but I feel I have one major downfall, this is that I seem to have an inability to close out MTTs! I may get ITM a quarter of the time, but out of the 58 recorded MTTs I have played (I have played hundreds of MTTs before I kept stats), I have only featured on TWO final tables. However I feel that a lot of this can be put down to variance and a small sample size, I seem to lose one major coinflip pot or get bad beated when I am in between ITM and the final table, so maybe my worries are in vain - I hope they are. Either way, I definitely need to study up on closing out MTTs a lot, and this is what I plan to do.

Happy pokering, campers!

$5 Rebuy - Great Finish

Yesterday I decided to play the $5 rebuy tournament on PartyPoker with a $10k guaranteed prizepool. It started with 1129 registered entrants, and an inevitable big first prize.

After spending little on rebuys, I had a nice 13k stack at the break, and the prize distribution was announce... almost $21k prize pool with a whopping $4.3k for first.. a prize in which I made an outright decision to win at this point:

"I shall win!!' said dwarfman.
"No you shan't!!" said dwarfman's demons.
"I shall win!!' said dwarfman.
"No you shan't!!" said dwarfman's demons.
"I shall win!!' said dwarfman.
"No you shan't!!" said dwarfman's demons.
"I shall win!!' said dwarfman.
"No you shan't!!" said dwarfman's demons.
"I shall win!!' said dwarfman.
"No you shan't!!" said dwarfman's demons.
"I shall win!!' said dwarfman.
"No you shan't!!" said dwarfman's demons.

And this conversation carried on for a while.

So then I got through the second hour and had a nice 33k stack, with the average being a mere 12k and around 400 players left (140 places paid total).

Before I knew it, the third hour was over and I had almost 70k with the average stack hanging around 25k with 200 ish players remaining. It was in the second hour that I made my only suckout post-rebuy period, I had AJ in the BB at 400/800 blinds with 35k behind, folded to the cutoff who pushes all in for his last 3k, I call and he flips JJ.. I catch my ace and gg him.

"I shall win!!' said dwarfman.
"K." said dwarfman's demons.

At the end of the 4th hour I was at around 80k, with the average being around 50k, I was ITM and there were around 110 players left.

The fifth hour passed and I finished it on around 120k chips, this was about what the average was, and there were 50 players left.... I was guaranteed a prize of $100 at least now.

The sixth hour was fun. I doubled up early to take my stack to around 250k, but blinds were getting ridiculously high and before I knew it, my 250k was an average stack, yet the blinds were 15k/30k. We were down to the final two tables, and I was excited.

My stack bobbed up and down between 240k and 320k for a while due to blind stealing, then with 11 players left I pick up 99 UTG with a 240k stack and 20k/40k blinds, on a 6 handed table. So naturally, I push it all in, unforunately the button insta calls and shows KK to win a monster pot, I was down to 70k and less than 2 big blinds, so on my big blind I look down at KQo, raised to me by a guy in MP, so I call and he flips AA!

"Lol pwned." said dwarfman's demons.
"Fuck you." said dwarfman.

Two bad hands for me, but my cards had been holding up all night until then, so it was kind of bound to happen at some point. I am however very pleased with the way I played, and even more pleased with my $167 for 11th place.

So close to FT, yet so far!

In follow-up to the last post

Sorry for the delay in telling this story guys, needed sleep and then I've had some work stuff to do.

Since I was on a pretty nasty downswing on LHE, I decided to invest a mere $10 into the Dwarfman NL Ring Challenge, in which you start with $10 at .25/.50 NL ring and move up a limit every time you win enough to buyin for the minimum at the next level. I did this because it would be fun and would be a nice short break from my currently low-confidence LHE game.

So I buyin for the $10, and before I know it, I'm at the 1/2 level with my $40, then I proceed up the levels until I break the $100 barrier and hit 3/6 with $120.

This all climaxed with moving to 5/10 NL with $200 and winning a monster $538 pot (doubling up my bankroll). Here's the hand that changed my career:

I have TT at CO on a 6 max table at 5/10 NL, I currently have $260 ish behind. There is one limper in front of me and I raise it up to $30, the table folds around and the limper calls

The opponent here was extremly pissed off at me and was maybe making irrational plays, so I felt I was ahead preflop.

The flop comes down 765, the limper checks to me, and I bet out $40, trying to entice a call from what I though was a weaker hand.

But instead, the guy goes into the tank for $1,100 and pushes all in. I firmly believe my read is right, he'd be raising AA-JJ preflop and would not be checkraising all in with a made straight, I think I'm way ahead, so I call.

The turn and river come both blanks, and the guy shows down T9o (?!?!.), so I take my $538 and leave the table.

That puts my bankroll at $1097 (although $415 is due to be paid off to stakers), but it was the best boost to my bankroll that I could ask for.

You can find out more about my challenge here (and if you go to one of the last posts on page 3, you can see my run at it): http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16315

Variance is a bugger

It's rather unfortunate that on my first day of blogging here I have to talk about the biggest one day LHE downswing I have had yet. :?

Here were yesterday's stats:

Hands Played: 372
Net BB Profit: -63
BB/100: -16.9

This is pure natural variance, bad beats and so on.. so there's no reason to get annoyed. Also I consider the fact that PartyPoker gave me $30 on their Halloween Handout. :P

As Sklansky says, I just have to keep making plays with a positive expectation, and the results will (eventually) sort themselves out.

So what am I doing now?

As I'm sure many of you have seen before, I have been known to change what game I play more often than David Beckham changes his hairstyle. But *finally* I feel I am going to settle on a game for a good few months at least.

I'm planning on building my way through the ranks at PartyPoker's Limit Holdem, starting at .5/1. I have been staked for $300 approximately and will need to pay back $415 by the end of 2005 (I hope to make the pay back by 31st November).

To make sure I somehow manage to stick to playing the same game for a long period of time, I have set myself a set of goals, click here to view them. I hope to fulfill these goals and really start building a big bankroll.

As you can see, I intend to play a lot of hand, the hand sizes I calculated work out to around 500 hands a day throughout the entire challenge. This may be tough, but I plan to really dedicate myself.

Of course, there will be a lot of posting and reviewing results in this blog, but I'll try my level best to not make it one of those incredibly boring ass blogs with piles of numbers and statistics with repetitive reviews, I'll add a bunch of other cool stuff, for your pleasure.

As of today, my balance is at approximately $599 at the time of writing this post. I am just about to start a 9 tabling session (on my 1600x1200 monitor icon_confused (screenshot below)), so I'll post some results and some articles a little later.
Here's a screenshot of when I have 9 tables open on PartyPoker (and yes, it is as hectic as it looks!! ).
