LOL Downswingaments

So I stopped updating every day and decided to run sick bad instead. Ive tilt spewed a little over the past week or so but not more than 3 buyins. Most of it has been a string of suckouts and coolers. Today was fun. Set over set, KK < AA, rivered set over set, straight < rivered flush (120bbs allin on flop), flush over flush for like 50bbs... so yea... As soon as my doomswitch turns off Ill start making some progress again. The sad thing is Ive actually been playing quite alot more aggro lately stealing plenty of pots and bluffing nits off top pairs. Then when I actually get a hand and get all ready to get paid off, they either have a better one or they make it on the river. Oh well I think I played pretty good poker today so thatll have to do for now. BR is back down to $2967 which is a shame. Im going to stick at it though. I know im playing a game that will beat 100NL. Just got to wait for it to kick in.

Oh yea. Ive moved $1500 over to party so I can have a bit more choice of game selection when Crypto is too rocky. We'll have to see how that turns out.

840 hands : +$292.59

I experimented with playing much more aggressively today. I was three betting TAGs alot more preflop in position, squeezing a fair bit and playing draws pretty aggressively. I still managed to lose most of my coinflips but I disoriented the TAGs so much that they were practically throwing money at me when I actually had a hand so it worked out pretty well.

I started the session off by regularly three-betting a guy who I noticed was stealing far too many of my blinds. (He turned out to be a pretty over the top maniac). I got allin preflop with him with AK Vs his JJ after he 4 bet me and I shoved. His Jacks held up and I was $100 down from the start. I laughed it off, carried on playing good poker and made back almost 3 buyins so Im pretty proud of myself there.

Hand of the day has got to be this awsome "bluff" where I defend my blind like a trooper.
(OK so I thought I had KK....)

1244 hands : +$181.25 (27-28/04/07)

I havnt had access to the forums for a couple of days. My ISP went bust and the guys who took over put some page blocking thing on or something until I gave them monies. Ok so Now Ive given them monies so heres a quick update of the last two days.

I felt I was playing very good poker both days but the second day it all went wrong. I made one mistake and spewed a buyin at someone when I flopped an inside straight flush draw and he had a slowplayed AA preflop. The way it happened was unexcusable. He made it perfectly clear that he wasnt folding and I pushed over the top needing him to fold something like 40% of the time to break even.

Apart from that I played very good poker and got hugely unlucky in the second day (and a little lucky the first day). At least its positive though.

597 hands : $-332.70 (+$100 bonus)

Ugh that was horrible. Again I think I played ok for the most part. Got a little distracted by the end when one of my mates started asking me maths stuff but for the most part I was focussed and playing pretty well. Got it in in a couple of spots where I was a small favorite and lost all of them. Got most of it in when I was a pretty huge favorite and then got sucked out on and paid off on the end.
Didnt hit any sets. Hardly hit any top pairs when I raised with AK type hands and hardly had any overpairs after raising a PP.
I got KK something like 4 times at the start of the session and everyone (including the 2 people at the table with 60+VPIP) folded every time.
All in all I think Almost everything I lost was due to bad luck. I did botch up an AJ hand right at the end but probably would have lost just as much if Id played it right.

Its a shame too since there were some huge fish at a few of my tables. I gave one of them my stack with under-trips to someone who was so aggro they could probably have had as little as top pair.

Anyway you have to expect these days every so often. Hopefully the next one wont be for a while. Better luck tomorrow.

288 hands : -$22.00

Today was very meh. Busy all day but decided to put in a few hands before bed. Got on at about midnight and played till 1.20am or so before realising I was far to tired to play my best poker and quitting for the night. I dont think I needed anything special to win tonight though really. Most of the tables were pretty weak/tight/passive and predictable with a megawhale or 2 per table. This meant it was easy to iso-raise and get into pots against a huge fish with a far weaker hand than me. The only problem was I didnt particularly get many hands and half the time I did the fish sucked out on me so meh. I may have to play at this time more often though. It seems alot easier than my usual time. I have so much work to do tomorrow but Ill try to get 2 hours or so in the evening.

Hand of the day against a loose villain who would call alot of raises and donk into me far too often to be hitting every time.

452 hands : +$244.75

Well my hangover wore off at last so I changed my mind about not playing today. Im glad I did too. +$244 in an hour and a half isnt bad at all. I was pretty comfortable but I decided to just play super tight just incase my thinking was still impaired. VPIP was around 15 average but I started around 11 until I got to know people and then opened up to probably around 18. I didnt get that many decent hands but I seemed to get them at the right times with the short stack fish deciding to come in when I had them.

There was one AK hand I played a little strangely but I still quite like how I played it.

Preflop

The table is 4 handed at the moment. Villain is slightly loose aggressive player with $350 or so. He seems reasonable. I have $116 and have been playing TAG (about 18 VPIP on this table).

Some people Fold he raises preflop to $4 and I reraise to $12 with A:diamond: K:diamond:. He thinks and calls. Ive reraised him a few times before and hes always folded.

Flop

7:spade: 3:diamond: Q:heart: : Pot $24.50

I bet out $14 and he thinks a little and then calls.

Turn : Pot $52.50

7:spade: 3:diamond: Q:heart: K:club:

He could be floating or he could have hit a set or w/e. I dont think he calls preflop with KQ. I decide to check/call. He checks behind. Thats odd because hes usually quite aggressive. I think hes caught a piece.

River : Pot $52.50

7:spade: 3:diamond: Q:heart: K:club: K:spade:

Im scared of getting raised by a better hand and at the same time dont think he'll call a chunky bet with much I beat so after thinking for most of my time I decide to check/call again.

He bets $25 and I pretty much instacall. He shows AQ and it is subsequently shipped.

I will post this hand in the HH section since the river check certainly doesnt seem standard but Im pretty happy with it against this villain.

445 hands : +$245.22

Thats more like it.

Played pretty good but nothing too special. Just tried to stay solid and not get too fancy. The deck really hit me in the face though. My third hand in was AA vs KK allin preflop against a deepstacked LAG who would later spew a few more chips at me with ludicrous bluffs.

Poker was cut a little short by a knock at the door from a few friends friends on their way to the pub. I tagged along and ended up going to a rock club who were selling shots for £0.50. I dont remember much of the end of the night except im still pretty hungover (8pm) and I seem to have twisted my ankle pretty badly somehow. Walking upstairs is almost impossible at the moment. I had planned to write 2000 words of project report and get some hands in today but the hangover pretty much ended any chance of either. Ill probably just sit around and do nothing until I fall asleep.

473 hands : -$60.88

Pretty uneventful. Played ok. Got some big hands where everyone folded. Got some medium hands where someone started betting at me.

A few floated cbets here and there but nothing too drastic.

One thing to note is that I had one guy on 3 of my tables who was TAG with alot of AG. We were sat next to each other on every table with me in position on 2 of them and him on the other one. He was playing very positionally, folding alot up front and raising ALOT from the cutoff and button. I think I handled him pretty well preflop and we didnt get into any real post flop confrontations since I either reraised or folded to him preflop.
The only hand that went to the flop was a hand where I raised 4x with 99 and then called his reraise to 14. I probably should have folded that preflop since I had no real idea what to do except try my best to spike a set.

Im back

well its been a long time since my last post, but then its been a long time since I played real poker. I took an extra course last semester and Uni work and life just got too much for me around christmas to the point where, after a long day of thinking I just couldnt be bothered to come home to a hobby that requres so much thinking. Poker above live 2NL stopped being fun so I just stopped playing.

Lately the old urges have been comming back so Ive decided to give it another whack. Ive cashed out a sizeable chunk of my roll and lost about $500 or so more which leaves me with around 2.5k to get going with. Im starting to feel like my instincts and perhaps more importantly my discipline are comming back.

Ive played for the past week, losing horribly for the first few days due to playing like shit.
I won a little for the next couple of days by bad beating 1 person and calling an allin with middle set when a full stack pushed over my flop raises with AQo on a Kxx flop.

Last night is the first time Ive felt I actually played good poker since the break, but I feel like I can carry it on if I can keep my discipline. I originally said I was going to be playing 50NL for a while, but at Crypto the game selection there is so much worse than at 100NL that it probably isnt worth it so im going to stick at 100NL for a little longer yet. Ill definatly be moving down if I dip below 2K though.

Ive got myself a nice shiny operation banner to keep track of my progress and hopefully Ill make it to 4K over the next month or 2.

Wish me luck FTR

I r fish

Ugh im so pissed off with myself right now. I just played like a total LAGtard. I bluffed a couple of guys who were obviously playing for stacks.
Im gunna go get some tea and calm down. Then maybe head over to Crypto and clear some more Bonus. I got owned by cards the day before yesterday and didnt tilt. It seems the tilt kicked in today for some reason instead and made me play retarded.

Thats better...

Well today was fun. +$250 in 2 hours (including clearing a $100 stars Bonus). This is how poker is supposed to be. Folded reasonably big hands to sets and called reasonably weak hands to bluffs. Its great when it all clicks.

I managed to win a buyin and a half at the tables despite getting set over setted by and incredibly strangly played KK.

This guy had been pretty passive so far but ive only seen 20 hands or so, so I dont think im ever getting away here getting 2.5 : 1. KK is just stupidly unlikely here. 44 and 88 arent so likely. I put him on Kcxc or somthing similar so I went for it.

All in all im pretty happy with my call here and Im pretty happy with how today went in general. I still think Im a bit too much of a calling station against passive types but its something im working on.

I guess this is why they call it "the grind"

Well today was brutal. Ive just finished a 6 and a half hour session after which I am up just over a buyin. I feel like I played fairly well today and been smacked in the face by the giant shovel that is varience. I was playing on very laggy tables and getting 4-5 callers after a 4BB preflop raise. I managed to sit myself directly in position on a terrible LAG and for a while I was slowly but surely bleeding him dry by inducing bluffs with TPTK. Then the following hand came up

Perhaps I should have just called his flop minraise and reevaluated but I felt that his range included pretty much any pair + draw and any 2 pair. All in all I dont think I was ever getting away from this against this guy.

Other than that the second half of the session was mostly about me getting 1/3 or more of my stack in as a massive favorite and then getting boned by the flop once I was committed.

Still, I think I managed to not tilt. And I brought it back up again towards the end. The swings here are sick. Having to repeatedly do things like calling a maniacs allin bluff with JJ on a Q high board is going to give me a heart attack at some point. This is definatly where the moneys at though. Lots more crazy players than at full ring. I just need to work on balencing a few areas of my game and figuring out what raise size to make it when there will be 5 callers of a 4BB raise and then I think I can kill this game. Ive also picked up a couple of tells from some of the LAGs which definatly make it easier to call them down with not much.

Im going to see if I can get another 4 hours or so tomorrow. Hopefully they will go a little smoother.

Wish me luck!

Today I have been postly playing........£25NL 6max

So I headed over to Sun Poker as planned and since they have hardly full ring tables I decided Id give 6max a go. Im also pretty sure playing 6max will make girls like me more. Its amazing how different the players are here compared to 100NL. I 4 tabled for an hour and a half and had 1 difficult decision to make in that time. These players just dont try to test you. Most of them were underbetting/checking when they had hands and calling big bets when they didnt.

I started the session off with a damn fine suckout worthy of Fnord.

I decided I was going to check/push any flop here. The K on the flop scared me but I was pretty sure the Ace was comming on the river :p.

He tilted off a nice chunk of change to me over the next half hour or so too which was nice.

The rest of the session was pretty standard. Make hands and bet them hard against the calling stations. I made one nice bluff but the tables were so loose it wasnt really the right time for fancy plays.

Im almost rolled for 100nL again already but im going to stay here for a little while and clear my $100 signup Bonus.

Anyway. gotta go get drunk now. Hopefully I wont be too hungover to play tomorrow :)

What to do...?

Well Ive taken my first short pop at stars 100NL. I find the players here are far more aggressive than Im used to and far more likely to float my cbets. I think this level is definatly beatable but Im going to need to adjust my game quite a bit. I think I played some pretty good poker for the most part. Ive always been terrible at moving up. I get a combination of fancy play syndrome and outright terror at the amount of money on the table. Anyway this time wasnt too bad as far as my attitude went. I found myself losing quite alot of chips from having to give up on continuation bets but im sure the times I actually had a hand came fairly close to making up for that.

My scariest push ever happened to me in my brief 100nL stint. Villain is a crazy LAGgro maniac and has been pushing the whole table around with crap for FAR too long. He doesnt seem to have any idea of when to slow down either but it seems to be working for him so far and hes built up a nice stack.

This was probably the scariest pot ive ever played in so far but I was almost certain I was ahead.

Sadly I also balenced this out with a couple of really silly calls which I wouldnt have made if I was comfortable with these stakes.

For example this embarrasingly donktastic hand after I tried to steal uber tighties blinds.

Yea so. Im not going to do this anymore.
I actually quite like the preflop raise since both villains were incredibly tight. Usually I wouldnt try to steal with such a weak hand but as mentioned, both players were incredibly tight and hey, my cards were sooted. Once he didnt fold the flop I should really have considered the tightness. My river play is just madness. I thought very hard about just calling the river, then decided there was a chance he had some sort of overpair and so I should minraise/ fold to a reraise (since he would never ever bluff). Then he pushed and I figured...what the hell its only money...

Anyway Im a little up at 100NL overall but then one day I wasnt feeling quite up to 100NL so I decided to play some party 50NL instead and got owned by the cards and now I dont feel rolled enough for 100NL.

This week Ive clawed my roll back a little playing 5 card draw on stars but I think the way to go is to stick some into Sun Poker with the FTR Rakeback deal and just play £25NL there until I feel rolled enough for my next 100nL shot. Ive played Crypto for ages so I know I can beat that game. Ill also take the $100 monthly Bonus and whatever Rakeback they want to throw at me so I should be back to 100NL in no time. Infact im pretty sure thats what Ill do...

Until next time.

All the cool kids are doing it...

Ive been reading alot over the past few days and since alot of the succesful poker players on this site have been helped by writing and then rereading a blog I figured I might as well give it a go.

This is going to be a place where I can collect my poker thoughts. I might post some real life stuff in here too if I think its important enough but I mostly want it to be poker. Im hoping it will keep a sort of diary for me so I can look back on it occasionally and see if im meeting my goals or just see how far I've come.

I've been a member of FTR for a little over a year now and in that time Ive seen various people come and go and plenty of new people come in and overtake me. Now Ive decided its my turn. This blog is the first step towards me taking my game more seriously and hopefully it will get me to think more about what I am doing right and what I am doing wrong.

I have no idea if anyone is going to read this but if you do then Id welcome feedback on pretty much anything about pretty much anything I write.

Let the games begin
