ok, the real reason I'm updating my blog...

....is this.

It is on the subject of improving your game.

I expect to get some negative feedback because of this, but whatever. If you choose to berate me because of this post, make sure it's because you don't agree with the PRINCIPLE of what this guy is saying, NOT because it is written with a huge degree of hostility and NOT because you want to be politically correct, and that some people are largely incapable of objectively looking at controversial issues.

I did not write this. I do not agree with everything written. I do not think it applies to 'newbies' of the game that don't really know the basics or what to think about/look at when analyzing a hand. I DO agree with the general principle when referring to advanced or even semi-advanced poker players.

Ok, I have a question; most the people that post on this particular forum looking for feedback are pretty intelligent. More intelligent than most the people that respond to their posts? Definitely. I don't understand WHY you people post. It's retarded. LOL HOW DO I PLAY A SET OR TPTK OR 2 PAIR IN THIS SITAUTON. What, you can beat f4cking 10/20nl+ but you can't work this [censored] out on your own? What, someone knows your own table image / the flow of the game better than you do? You people are f4cking retarded, you're sitting here waiting for some illsuive panacea that never comes, you're waiitng, refreshing the HS forum, waiting for some new SECRET PANACEA TO GIVE YOU THE NEW SECRETES TO BEAT THE NEXT LEVEL OF POKER. GUESS WHAT RET4RD. The only way you're going to get better is by analysing the hand yourself within the context of your game style. YAY CTS NEVER FOLDS A SET. YAY SAMO DOES. WHO. GIVES. A F4CK. You're smart enough to work this [censored] out on your own people. And your answer will be better than other peoples.

The ONLY reason I can see for a HSNL forum at all is a) braggery b) when someone gets f4cking wasted and decides not to hold back. Keep on waiting, because most of you newbs aren't getting wasted and posting your thoughts on the game theoeretical impacts of overbetting.

Peace,
Martov Nikels

It is amazing what you can do with a little bit of thinking and a little bit of experience when it comes to poker. Seriously, for those that are constantly searching the internet trying to figure out how to play perfect poker, give it a try sometime. It's unfortunate, but generally speaking, the closer someone is to playing 'perfect poker', which is obviously unattainable, the less likely they are going to divulge the information and thought processes' that make that person so much money.

I'm not saying that posting on forums and asking others for help isn't useful. You just have to understand that it's no substitute for thinking on your own, and it's not even close in my book.

Class dismissed.

I don't care what anybody says, this is impressive, especially for a player who's main game is 2/4. Feel free to say how awesome this is in the randomness thread (community), Lukie's guarantee (shorthanded NL), or my blog discussion thread (blog thread).

I've been playing an incredible amount of hands lately. I am fairly confident that I have the entire theory of poker figured out (and I'm not referring to the book that I have never read). I may start posting these in my blog or possibly in the forums or my commune thread. Of course I will give hands as examples and such if I actually do make a real effort to start up my blog again.

Back by popular demand!

It is amazing how many people have told me that I need to start writing in my blog again. Whether it be the poker content that can't be beat, the sarcastic/brutal writing style that I have, or my documented successes and demises, it seems like people enjoy it.

As such, I felt that I would make a post in it, or something like that. First topic: AK is not the new AA!!!

To be clear, there are times when putting a 4th raise all-in with AK is a great play. An example of such would be at 100bb eff stacks when a very agressive opponent opens on the button, and you repop him from the BB with AK, which you have been doing for a wide range. Button puts in a healty 4-bet, which he has done a couple times now. Push your AK and be happy about it.

Now, make it 150bb deep, where UTG opens (even in a 5-handed game), where the guy has folded to all of your 3-bets thus far, and it becomes a HUGE spew play, nothing less. Expect to see KK/AA here a ton.

Don't be that guy. If you want to be 'that' guy, practice spiking aces on the flop. Getting them on the turn or river gets you Bonus points.

So I've kinda gotten back in the groove the last 2 days of playing. Hadn't really played any online poker in about a week and half before. I played some 1/2, won some money, lost some money, yadayadayada, and when all was said and done, I felt like I was playing well and was up a little bit of money.

Then I told myself, self, you can't be playing 1/2 for the rest of your life. You need to make it in the big time. Now I know 2/4 isn't the big time, but it's a start, so I played some of that. +3 buyins or so then I decided that after a few thousand hands for the day I should quit now before I lost my concentration. So tomorrow I'm gonna be back there. I'm also going to start up a party account very soon and perhaps start playing over there on a part-time basis. I'll probably start at NL50 or NL100 or so and get used to the site and hopefully within a day or so I'll feel comfortable playing 2/4.

Also I'm going to make a Winstar trip report, which should have some poker content (we played all day for 3 days straight basically).

Tomorrow, 2/4's going dowwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnn...

simply depressing

Tonight probably wasn't the smartest time to move up to 2/4 again. I was kinda tired from the day and I started late. Plus I always start my sessions off bad. Ugh, dropped almost 3 buyins in total and I'm down to about 12.8k from about 14.1. And I only played 1400 hands.

Also, I'm starting to hate PokerTracker. This goddamn program constantly freezes when I try to open my NL ring stats. Like I wasn't already frustrated enough, jesus christ. Anybody have this problem? What about PokerOffice?

Anyway, I hate this program. I want to show some HH's but this bitch has frozen on me about 20 straight times (no sarcasm), so I give up.

this game is discusting

variance, donk plays, bad beats, tilt, cold decks, endless frustration, and for some reason i keep coming back.

I'm not sure which was more swingy tonight, my bankroll, or my quality of play. Regardless, I finished off stron.......... errr scratch that, I was finishing strong, then I dropped a couple stacks on simaltaneous hands on different tables. Yeah, full stacks.

Anyway, in a day where in my first session I went something like from 14.3k, down to the high 13's, up to the low 15's, and down to about 14.6k. then this session, again, back down to the 13's, then back to around 14.7k or so. And I'm back down to a bit under 14.1k.

Anyway, I knocked off 2400 hands this session, and I end the day down a few hundred bucks. Which is unfortunate because I left so much money on the table and spewed MANY buyins away being an over-aggro donkey, trust me. soo many hands to show, maybe later though.

what a load of crap

I started this session up about a grand, then I lost about $800 of that (and surprisingly quick). So I'm chillin at almost 14.6k in my stars account.

Final table of the $109 I played today paid, so obviously I felt Q5s was a good enough hand to bubble (10th) with. I'm such a donkey.

I'd love to post some hands, but frankly, I'm pissed, tired, agitated, etc., so maybe later. I think I'm going to take tonight off from poker.

I played 5440 minus however many hands I played last night (I never closed my stars client). So I think that's about 2000 hands or so if I remember correctly.

Making money is fun.

THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE POSTED LAST NIGHT AT AROUND 3:30 AM OR SO. APPARANTLY I DID NOT USE THE 'POST' FEATURE, SO IT'S BEING POSTED NOW, ABOUT 8 HOURS LATER THEN IT SHOULD HAVE. THAT IS ALL.

Just got done playing another 3350 hands of poker. Now before any of ya'll start bitching about how I need to go outside, I did the following today:

-slept in
-trolled around FTR for a bit and did other random stuff like made food, talked to people, etc
-worked out
-went to my mom's for dinner and took my niece for a walk. And there was this fine girl outside by her pool/sidewalk with what appeared to be her little sis or whatever, and they came over and talked to me. Shoulda got the number, but she mighta been too young. I'm gonna guess 18 which would be fine, but I'm known to overshoot just a tad so I played it on the safe side.
-got some sushi at the awesome japanese place
-played poker (lot of shorthanded/heads up, probably played 5-6 hours).
-umm now I"m making food and I'm gonna watch a rerun of the dallas v miami game (don't know anything about the game yet, and if I go on FTR and read the results somewhere I might throw a fit).

Also, got my BR back up to around 14.3k. In other words, I'm tearing 1/2 apart. Eventually I'm going to start mixing 1/2 and 2/4 tables, I think. But seriously, when you take your bankroll from 16.5k to under 9k in a matter of a week or so, you tend to be hesitant about these things. Such is the case for me.

Time for a few hands...

Ok this hand needs some 'splainin. This table was getting wild. Chicago Al was just straight up pwning people, but the game was playing really loose and donkish. Getting stacked with an overpair at 150bb deep, especially against someone that limp/calls, check/raises, and pushes the turn generally sucks very hard, but I thought it was +EV at the time. Meh, set, whatever. F him.

BTW my PokerTracker stats on this guy:

229 hands, 33/13, +$1852 which equals a +202ptbb/100 winrate. Yes, 202.

What's sad, is as bad as this table was, I lost almost a buyin on it if memory serves me right.

After a while, everyone leaves and we start playing heads up. At the time, including this game, I was playing 3 heads up games, 2 shorthanded games (like 3-4 players), and another 2 full ring games, or something like that. There was an 8th (sit n go which I obviously bubbled in for like the 8th straight time) somewhere in there too.

Anyway, I was destroying him heads up until this ABSOLUTELY REDONKULOUS HAND CAME UP. Yeah dude, call my raises OOP with J7o, then chase your super duper duuuuuuuuper obvious straight draw that has no implied odds down to the river, where you hit running trips. Give me a break. I thought a really slowplayed KQ/KT was his most likely hand, as I was reallllly pounding at this guy in position.

fwiw bet/call probably isn't the best line on the river for me but SSHhhhhhh

Let's talk about having a read on somebody. I knew exactly what this fucker had, and as soon as the heart hit on the river I nearly cried. The point, however, is that I owned him. He was an unknown semi-lagtard and I felt his preflop button calling range here was fairly wide, so AQ/AK unlikely. The timing of his flop call and turn push made me almost certain he had the flush draw, despite the Ah being on the board. F results, they don't matter.

MY GREAT BIG WTF???????? HAND OF THE DAY!

WTF?????????? WAS HE THINKING??? (granted I had my continuation game going full force, but this is kinda rediculous. And the call on the end is just laughable, despite him getting 6:1 or whatever. Dude, what are you hoping for? that he's on an open-ender and your 6 cards are live? Errrm wait, still a bad call. Maybe he has 45, and the river will be a duece and YHIG!!! wow.

he's an unknown and I assume he is busto by now so I wouldn't bother searching this guy.

Ok i had a bunch more I wanted to show but George just IM'd me.

ALSO I WANT TO GIVE A HUGE SHOUTOUT TO BRYCE (bdawg56kg) for putting up with all my nonsense and sorting through the masses of HH's and chat I send him on a nightly basis. He sends me a lot of HH's too but they all have valid points and are interesting, not necessarily the case with the garbage I send him. holla

An awesome hand I want to show you guys

If there are any readers, tell me what you think of my thought process here throughout this hand.

preflop riase is a bit on the loose side, but whatever. Flop is standard, and the turn is fantasic where I can rep an AK/KQ type hand and get him to fold a large part of his range. I also have the nut flush draw.

Now, given his action, the timing of his calls, etc, I thought there was a really good chance he was drawing. If that's the case, my ace high is good unless he picked up a stupid pair along the way, but that makes his hand about as good as air as far as HE'S concerned.

River completes 67 and QJ straight draws. Well J7 too, but who calls my UTG raise in UTG+1 with J7. Anyway, if he does have a draw he's going to either check behind and I'm going to be good, or he's going to take a stab at it and fold to my check/push. Bdawg didn't like my line, but whatever.

Apparantly my line REALLY looked like QJ, b/c he went into the tank a long time and finally mucked [edit: and by mucked, I obviously mean called :(]. I'll admit, I could easily have something like QJ clubs here, and this is the perfect type of river to c/r, where your hand is very well hidden. Oh well. Maybe next time.

I'm a machine

Just got done with a 4,653 hand session. Up about $1100 total. Dropped a little over a buyin at the very end, but whatever.

I'm really tired right now and I'm talking to bdawg on AIM at the moment. It seems every night I blow him off while I right up a blog entry, so this time I'm gonna stop writing and actually talk to him!!

For your amusement...

omaha!!

I guess 5k+ hands of holdem just wasn't enough for me. 4/5 tabled pot limit omaha (PL25) afterwards for a while. 249 hands, up exactly 45 cents. That's probably my longest session ever. WHEEEEEEEE. Look at me picking off that bluff. That newb. I'm such a fish at this game it's not even funny...

poker is fun again :)

Got my BR up around 12.4k playing a LOT of 1/2 today, despite dropping a few hundred bucks on random sng's. I played about 5,300 hands of NL ring combined over 2 sessions.

I stacked a guy a bit ago (set vs aces up = brutal <img src=" />, and he rebought for something odd like $116.90. I had been closing down my tables too, and this was actually my last one. Well I got this extremely evil urge to clean him out (SOMEBODY'S GOING TO DO IT, WHY NOT ME???), so I've been waiting around for a chance to stack him. Well he's [edit: not] very good (I've seen worse though), but I've had enough. I'm done for the night.

Here's a few donked hands....

This HH comes with a bit of history. I had squezed preflop a bit ago against smpgdi, and the pot raise preflop and the c-bet that followed cost me about $100. Had to c/f after that. So I'm thinking, who knows whats going through this guy's mind. The limp/coldcall scared me a bit. I don't think I'm ever good on this river, but I'm getting such a good price! bleh. I'm a fish.

OH WAIT, I'M GONNA PLAY THIS GUY HEADS UP. HE HAS $154, WHEEEEEEEEE.

ok, BR is chillin at $12,551 now. I actually didn't X out of the table like I had thought, and I looked at my taskbar and realized it was still up. Well I go to close it, and I realize this guy is chillin there all by himself. So I sit in, and after about 10 hands I stack his ass.

Over at 2p2, they have a line they call 'stackadonk'. Pretty self explanitory. The line is lead flop, check/raise turn.

The TRUE stackadonk is check/call flop, check/minraise turn. Let me demonstrate.

Also, I want to show one hand from early in the session. I know this guy has a tight 3-betting range and I expect him to have a big hand here a large majority of the time. I tried my hardest to play this hand like a donkey would play a draw in this spot. Didn't work. He tanked and folded. I don't know this particular opponent extremely well, but we've played together 'enough' that he knows I'm not exactly a loose cannon in spots like this. I tried repping a draw, but in reality, I just BLATANTLY told everybody I had a set. c/r, push turn... b/3bai... c/c....whatever, just not check/massiveoverbetpush. Oh well. I tried.

still rebuilding the roll

Been playing almost 1/2 exclusively, and a few random sng's here and there which I've obviously lost money on. BR is climbing again and is around 11.2k.

I'm thinking of starting to play some Party Poker in the near future, and I still have to give out a little tip to the winner of my contest in the commune.

wheeeeeeeee, LUKIE'S DONK HAND OF THE DAY. Used a donk line against a donk, what can I say. Humorously, he woke up with middle set. Lol. Poor guy. I'm going to start posting hands more regularly, I think. If somebody would post in my comments thread and let me know that I have at least 1 reader that isn't myself, it would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

havn't updated this in a while

I took a few days off to recover from this most brutal of games, and I've been playing 1/2, although not as much as I was putting in at 2/4 a few weeks ago. I'm back over the 10k mark though which is good. Hmmm... maybe I'll post a few hands!

This is one of the reasons why not leading your sets kind of sucks. I call preflop out of position, check the flop, and there's a bet and a raise in front of me. Anything I do here just screams strength. At the time, I felt my cold call was much more of a concern to natbot then the other guy's push, and not leading out on the flop may have cost me the chance to stack him. I'm not sure if that's the case, and um, the board doesn't exactly become friendly...

fucking bullshit

I just played 800 hands and dropped 5 buyins at NL400.

Ugh, no more listening to gabe. It's back to 1/2 this time for real to rebuild the br which is sitting ugly right now at a bit more then 9.2k. Yes, that's a little over half of what it was a week ago.

Villain here was an unknown. Never seen him before. This is a bad play vs an unknown, but I had a feeling he was very weak, I was right, and my preflop squeeze + cbet turned semi bluff ended in disaster. Q5, what the f***????????? I had folded for like 3 straight orbits. So much for image plays.

Not sure what I think about this. Villain was very tight and I thought there was a good chance he was overplaying a QQ+, AJ type hand. but the 3-bet push on the turn is usally much better then that. I'm going to think about this hand some more. Comments?

Unreal. Note: when someone raises preflop, check/calls the flop, then check/raises the turn. They hit big. I somehow knew what he had as soon as he c/r'd me... it was the only hand that even made sense.

I have an idea

I'm going to look at my sessions in the last week or so, and just concentrate on big pots that I lost. Now I know this can turn out to be horribly results oriented and biased, so I'm going to do my best to do the following:

Look at hands where I lost a big pot. If I feel like I misplayed the hand, I'll make a note of it. This post should range anywhere from extremely lame to moderately entertaining and educational. I have no idea.

- AA no good you f'ing moron. Jesus christ, how obvious can it be???

- bad spot to 2 barrell. He called your 3-way cbet with a player to act behind him, c/f ace high, idiot.

- don't talk

- don't complete 32s from the SB you doofus and you won't get yourself into this predicament.

- c/r bluff with ace high in mutliway pot after you raised from the blinds = -EV

- goddamnit lukie, you know to check this turn. Somebody else hit their draw and they hit it better then you.

- stop calling check/raises with middle pair you shithead.

- wow, what a fold on the river! You finally make a good decision on this street.

- rrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiissssssseeeeeeeeeeee > cccccccccaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllllllll

- don't talk

- 3-bet preflop >>> c/r bluff on flop, c'mon man, this is donk shit.

- wow, what did you think he was going to show??? min 3-bet preflop = be scared.

- again, what did you think he was going to show? People will agressively value bet when they are ahead there, and be happy to check through when they can beat your completely whiffed c-bet.

- dude, raise or fold somewhere in here. preferably fold. If you must call the flop and turn with TPTK, fold to this river where you aren't ever good.

- read about pot odds

- your very tight preflop game often makes the 2nd barrell less effective since people are genereally less likely to take marginal/poor hands past the flop against you. And when you start getting played back at, it's because they can beat AA, not because they are trying to move you off AK. Translation: stop being a donkey.

- When you get allin preflop with KK against a regular in a full ring game, he will have AA. If you think there's a doubt about this, you're mistaken. The regulars are as good or better then you, and you play too tight of a game for them to have anything else, ever. Save for possibly the last card combo of KK, but they'll find a call somewhere most likely.

- yes dipship, he turned his flush. Believe him.

- what a douchebag

- ugly, just ugly. xQTA isn't exactly a good board for TPTK you over-aggro donkey.

- what would possess you to ever try to get a thin value bet on this river?? Yes, his check/call with a better hand was LIKELY.

- Dude, if you're going to isolate a weak limper with K8s, fold to his c/r when you flop middle pair. godddddamn. yes he c/r'd his A9 TPTK, get over it.

- omg of all the TERRRRRRRRRIBLE RIVER CALLS you've made, how do you fold aces up to this bet from this donkey????????? jesus man. these guys don't come around often. Then again it could have been a good fold. Who knows. LETS GET SOME COMMENTS ON THIS ONE******* This guy is loose and agressive. I think it's likely he turned or rivered a better 2 pair. Thoughts? I think preflop we are deep enough and my (assumed) skill edge post flop big enough to make this preflop call +EV.

- jesus, give small and/or min-raises more respect you fucktard.

- don't talk

- yes, another set over set. I guess there's nothing wrong with saying 'rigged', but otherwise, don't talk. This one can slide.

- Dude you have fucking top pair, no kicker. Don't make heroic call downs. This hand in particular makes me want to hit something. THINK OF ALL THE TIMES HE LIMP/FOLDED OR LIMP/CALL, CHECK/FOLDED HIS SB TO YOU, YOU MOTHERF***ING DONKEY.

- yes, he runner runner over straighted your once nut-straight. Get over it. Don't talk.

- wheeeeeeeee flopped overfull losing to flopped quads = fun. saying GODDAMNIT LEE is perfectly appropriate here.

- stop making heroic calldowns as a result of tilt (had nothing to do with the above hand as this was much later in the session). Oh yeah, don't tilt. it's not worth our time.

I'm sick of looking at hands where I lost a ridiculous amount of money. I'm going to do awesome this session, watch. fuck variance. 2/4 here I come.

Here's another interesting graph...

http://img333.imageshack.us/img333/6923/wholedatabase6da.jpg

This one is of the 187k hands I've played in the last 4 months or so. This is the vast majority of hands I've played in my lifetime. The winrate is bad, I know, but at least it's still a win rate. The vast majority of these hands are at NL400, NL100, and NL200, in that order. 2.74bb = 1.37ptbb/100. The microstakes games are a tiny tiny fraction of the total hands while messing around with friends.

Truth is, I've played in games I wasn't ready for, which is reflected in my overall winrate. Also notice how ridiculously fast you can lose money, as noted by one spike in particular (and that was before I started the '100k hand quest').

Here's a graph of my 100k hand quest:

http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/8619/deargod9yl.jpg

It get's ugly near the end, especially the VERY end.

I'm thinking of resuming, by the way.

This is a sad day for me...

I just dropped a few more buyins and I've decided that it's time for me to move back down to 1/2.

Current BR: $10,997

Hands played this session: 401

No tournies played

time played: 54 minutes

100K HAND QUEST IS A FAILURE. Here are the results:

Starting BR (May 17): $10,189
Finishing BR: $10,997

Tournies played: 18: (-$505.30)

2/4 ring hands played: 37,533

Total profit (ring and tournies combined): $808

Minutes played: 3891 minutes

I'm really dissapointed in myself right now. I mean, I know it's not the end of the world but I still feel like shit. I think I need some time off (that usually means 12-18 hours for me), and I'm going to start up NL200 again.

LUKIE'S DONK HAND OF THE DAY: I knew he didn't have the bare 9 b/c this guy would never c/r tp here. I used all my time on the river reasoning that I've under-rep'd my hand at this point but realistically, I can only beat a bluff and solid taggs don't bluff other solid taggs in nothing pots when the other guy raises out of the blinds. *sigh*

Here's a tough one. I lead with my huge combo draw on the flop, and get called in f'ing 4 spots. WTF???????? And I hit my shitty low, bad reverse implied odds flush. we are over 150bb deep and I told myself when I led the turn, that I should fold to a raise from birdboy. Well I get min raised and I make a stubborn call and then a crying call on the river (by this point, I had underreprented my hand so much to the point where he could be trying to get in some real thin value with a worse hand.)

On a side note, wow, I wish this game always played like this....

Here's a hand where this guy leads out and I really don't think he has much on the flop, and I felt like by me calling and him leading out again on the turn, it was likely he had a king, so I pushed (eff stacks aren't deep) thinking there was very little chance he'd fold. I play really weird in this hand. I should probably fold preflop but whatever. I lead my combo draw, then pull a stop and go when my 32 high flush hits. I figured he'd be very curious and look me up with decently strong made hands, but he bluffs on the end and I'm kinda happy he showed. I guess he kind of figured his hand didn't really have much showdown value and that he should either fold or raise, where I think a lot of players would just call here. Meh, I got outplayed.

Standard tourney hand for me to go out on. This is an attempt to salvage some tourney pride (because I'm no doubt a better tourney player then my meaningless sample size shows) and to show you how much of a donkey a lot of tourney players are. Just because I can.

Here's a hand where I river a straight flush. I'm not sure what I think about the guy in the hand because he's pretty much an unknown. I think it's likely that he has the naked ace of spades. If my guess is correct, I think my play is extremely awesome on an unpaired board. Leading normally, and check/raising the river are both better plays then this I think. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I started this session off pretty hot, but at the end, I was 8-tabling while talking on the phone with this girl and my A/C is broken in my apartment. It is 92 degrees according to my digital thermostat and I've been sweating buckets while in boxers and a beater. Down 2 buyins at the end and I had the sense to get up and leave.

Lukie's donk hand of the day:

I'm so f'ing stupid, by the way. Not results orietned. Don't talk on the phone with an ex-girlfriend while 8tabling in 90 degree++ heat. Seriously, bad for poker.
